Contractor of The Year Award
2004 -Platinum, Region I & Chrysalis Residential Exterior under $100,000
The homeowners goal in this project was to attain a more traditional look as opposed to the current modern look of the curved wall and vertical siding they had on the existing home.
The homeowner also wanted a rich wooden look and the convenience of low maintenance. The project included the addition of a porch and updating of the siding. The porch was the main focus and we designed it with an inserted stairway to maximize room on the porch and maintain the required code setbacks. A surveyor performed a stake out prior to start.
We suggested adding grills to the existing Pella casement windows. The addition of the grills, along with changing the window unit above the garage from a casement unit to an Anderson oval with art glass helped us achieve our goal.
The homeowner did not want lattice under the porch so we designed a screen using Azec boards and vinyl coated garden screening. The detail of the bottom Weather Best rail is also visible as is the Evergrain decking.
Evergrain 5/4 x 6 decking by Epoc was chosen because of the wood grain look and the ease of care. The railing system is by Weather Best, again chosen for its beauty and ease of care. The railing comes pre-finished in white and is made from polymer wood composite material that stands up to the weather like vinyl but with a true wood look.
The porch posts were designed to look like a traditional country porch. They were constructed by covering the framing with Dura-rock, wire mesh and a mud coat of mortar. We then added Eldorado Stone. Slabs of bluestone were used as a base for the Permacast posts. We used six foot posts and cut them to size to carry the weight of the porch roof. We were also able to match the existing Tamko 40 year Architectural roof shingles.
The siding by Certainteed is Cedar Impressions Perfection shingle in a brand new triple five reveal. The windows were trimmed with Certainteed three and a half inch lineals in white with pacific blue rosettes. The peak over the roof received Certainteed scallop Cedar Impressions in granite gray to accent the peak of the reverse gable roof.
